How to Use Google Hangout: Stacey Myers Knows How To Hang Out

Stacey Myers is a social media maven. I learned everything I know about Twitter with her. Now she is cooking up a Hangout Hints and How To. It is a great way to stand out from the crowd and look like a leader in your field. But you want to make sure you know what you are doing, or it can have the opposite effect. I’ve personally learned a lot about Google Hangouts from Stacey and can vouch for her skill as a trainer.

The Benefits of Using Hangouts to Promote Your Book

With the power of the top two search engines in the world, you will increase your visibility when you follow their guidelines. Your Hangout videos posted on YouTube will get a little bit of "Google juice" for a better ranking than an equivalent blog posting. These videos list at least 10 ways you can use Google Hangouts:

Following the steps in Hangout Hints and How To you will look like a pro and people will be asking you to show them how to do what you are doing.   Get registered for her course here.

Doing hangouts is probably not as daunting as you might have first thought.  You just need someone to walk you through it so you know where everything is and how it all works. Please let me know in the comments below if you have used Google Hangouts to promote your book or business.

Intrusive Marketing at its best. Can you top this for your book?

The slogan ‘Our Heroes are Back’ (Onze helden zijn terug! in Dutch) is used to announce that, after an absence of one decade, all major pieces in the Rijksmuseum’s collection are back where they belong. This is what happens when they suddenly emerge in an unsuspecting shopping mall somewhere in The Netherlands.

The end result

This flash mob recreates Rembrandt’s Night Watch, considered one of the most famous paintings in the world. This mis-en-scene is a perfect blend of art and theatre, with a clear Call To Action.

This video demonstrates the joy, wonder and love that can be elicited when we celebrate local cultural heritage. Any city or town has something amazing to celebrate. Any book, no matter how “technical” has a human element that can be reinforced. How can you leverage your book?

The intrusion technique

It intrusively engages with the audience, and can be one of the most powerful marketing tools. Let’s explore the strength of this mechanism. Its power derives from curiosity it elicits, through:

  • -unexpectedness
  • -perfect balance of intrusion versus choice of not participating
  • -has a clear, simple and memorable Call To Action.

Creative use of Intrusive Marketing

Rembrandt's "The Night Watch", PublishingSuccessNow.com

In the case of this flash mob event, they used

  • theater (draws on one’s imagination and romance),
  • music to draw attention and interrupt the audience’s train of thought,

and was professionally executed.

When we say “Intrusive Marketing” we mean actions unsolicited by the consumer, like telemarketing calls in the middle of dinner, or the obnoxious pop-windows on certain websites. You have to click on the x/close sign in order to continue reading. Why are these obnoxious?

Because they are obtrusive. You have no choice. While they are effective in the short term (higher sign-up rates) they tend to generate a high attrition rate. Consumers tend to cancel out of the service within the next 10 days.

If you offer a good product (your book content has to be relevant to your audience), they will choose to hear or read your message. You don’t have to hand-cuff them.

Can you use this technique for your book launch?

  • How can you adapt this idea for your book party or book launch?
  • Does your book have an element of public service?
  • If you have a flashback element in your content, can you affordably recreate it and present it in a public venue?
  • Does your city have a public festival calendar? Could you sponsor a sketch?

Tip: 4 ways to get your message out with theater:

  • Sponsor a high school arts and drama class play (your “play” is the subject of one chapter, for instance)
  • Hire actors to act out the theme of your book, or a chapter.
  • Create a (Victorian) tea party in the park if your book is about etiquette.
  • Hire a 3 piece band to play inside the local baseball stadium/retail place, movie theater, pet shop…depending on your book subject.

In addition to theater and live event, what other “Intrusive” techniques can you think of for promoting your book? Leave a comment below to help fellow authors.

Notice in the video that there is no interaction with the public. Interaction is another technique, which can be just as powerful, and will be the subject of another blog post.
